Mr. Charlton's Courses

7TH GRADE SCIENCE
7th grade science offers students a chance to explore and classify life through a wide range of life science subjects.  Such subjects include the scientific method, cells, cell processes, cell reproduction, heredity, the theory of evolution, ecology, and animal science.  Exploration and learning of these subjects will take place through collaborative learning, discussion, labs, activities, and projects.

BIOLOGY

PREREQUISITE: successful completion of physical science

This class consists of four units: biochemistry, ecology, cell biology, and evolution. Biochemistry: reinforces knowledge on atomic structure, solutions, carbon compounds, and energy and metabolism. Ecology: introduces students to interactions that organisms have with other organisms as well as their environment. Cell biology: reinforces parts and functions of cells, transport, photosynthesis and cellular respiration, and reproduction. Evolution: reinforces students theories on how life may have developed on earth, including primate evolution. Exploration and learning of these units will take place through notes, discussion, labs, activities, and research.

ANATOMY AND GENETICS
PREREQUISITES: C or better in biology

This class consists of two units: human anatomy/physiology and genetics. Human anatomy is an in-depth look at the various organ systems of the human body. Genetics covers mitosis and meiosis, heredity DNA and its importance, and the role of genes. Exploration and learning will take place through notes, discussions, labs, activities, research, mammal dissection, and fruit fly breeding.

CHEMISTRY
PREREQUISITE: successful completion of physical science, biology, and algebra II

This course reinforces the material that students learned in physical science. The course further explores the structure of atoms, families of elements and the periodic table, chemical bonding, chemical reactions, solutions, and acids and bases. The course also introduces major concepts in chemistry including the mole, electron configurations, solids, liquids, and gases. Exploration and learning of these units will take place through notes, discussion, labs, activities, and research.
